You must develop a hierarchy of the behaviors that you would like to see the child exhibit. For example, in response to out-of-seat behavior, many teachers may initiate a reinforcement system to increase in-seat behavior. Although the child may earn multiple reinforcers for remaining in his seat, this does not guarantee that he will engage in constructive or appropriate behavior while remaining seated. Often, multiple reinforcers and multiple levels of reinforcement must be initiated. For example, in first grade, Jeremy was provided with one reinforcer for sitting and a second reinforcer for working while sitting.

A team approach is most often used with children (and at times adults) when a behavior is both ingrained and not functional for them or for others. Think of an unusually aggressive child or an adult with an active addiction. These behaviors are subject to change based upon the long studied and validated area of Behavior Psychology, also called Behaviorism. This article will provide you with both the principles for understanding, and the tools for implementing behavior modification.
Several people have criticized the level of training required to perform behavior modification procedures, especially those that are restrictive or use aversives , aversion therapy , or punishment protocols. Some desire to limit such restrictive procedures only to licensed psychologists or licensed counselors. Once licensed for this group, post-licensed certification in behavior modification is sought to show scope of competence in the area through groups like the World Association for Behavior Analysis. Still others desire to create an independent practice of behavior analysis through licensure to offer consumers choices between proven techniques and unproven ones (see Professional practice of behavior analysis ). Level of training and consumer protection remain of critical importance in applied behavior analysis and behavior modification.
